Ngan's Story

Currently, I am on a public health track in order to become a pathobiologist. I'm extremely invested in healthcare as a career, and I can't imagine myself doing anything else. Although I'm only a college freshman, my loan payments have begun to get to me. I need help because I'm a first-generation student that has had to navigate this on her own - my parents do so much for the rest of my family, and unfortunately, that is not something that I can have transferred over to our FAFSA information. I currently attend an out-of-state institution that has an amazing program for my major, but is quite costly (I'm still unsure if it's worth it from a financial standpoint). I've applied for numerous scholarships, and I've taken out a massive loan for my first semester of school, but I'm not sure where else to go from there. Once my campaign is funded, I plan to "pay it forward" by donating what I can to other educational causes. Further down the line, I hope to possibly start my own scholarship fund. Coming from my low-income background in a big city, I've seen many friends struggle financially in the way that I do. I want to be the help that I wish I had when I was younger.

My Q&A

Describe yourself as a student.

I am an extremely hardworking student. In high school, I was valedictorian with a 4.49 GPA, and I balanced numerous clubs and activities that I felt would help me enrich myself. I am always looking for ways to improve my skill sets, and I think that education is a priority when it comes to things like that.

Explain why your education is a unique and special cause that donors should care about.

My educational path is one that is focused on giving back and solving problems. As a pathobiologist on a public health track, I want to get involved with the government and community to identify and eradicate the diseases that are plaguing us. This goes from parasitic diseases to mental ones, from affecting humans, to pets.

How - if at all - do you plan to "pay it forward" if a donor funds your schooling?

I can only hope that one day I will have enough to make a drastic impact on a person or a community. If a donor contributes to my campaign, I plan to pay it forward by allocating what I can to the charities and organizations in my  community, because every bit helps. In the future, I hope to have my own scholarship fund to help others like myself.
